| | | Naglieri Non-Verbal Ability Test (NNAT) | | Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) utilize the Naglieri Non-Verbal Ability Test (NNAT) to assist in the identification of gifted and talented students. This multiple choice puzzle format test is administered to all kindergarten and second grade students each year. Additionally, as of 2009, students who are new to SPPS in grades one, three, four and five also take the test.
During the 2009 - 2010 school year the NNAT will be administered between December 1 and December 8 of 2009. The family of each student being tested will be notified by letter of the exact date the test will take place.
Students being tested are given a brief introduction to the test format and a few sample problems to familiarize themselves with that format. Students in Kindergarten are given additional support prior to the test itself to prepare them for the process of choosing "one best answer" for each puzzle problem and indicating that "one best answer" clearly on paper.
Test Results will be mailed to families in early February. Students scoring at the 92% or higher are automatically identified as gifted and talented. Students scoring between the 85th percentile and 91st percentile are automaticall considered further through a process called "portfolio review". Student scoring below the 85th percentile are generally not considered further for identification as gifted and talented. However, any child may go through the "portfolio review" process upon request. All decisions are finalized prior to the school selection deadline each spring.
