The purpose of homework is to:
• practice or reinforce skills and concepts we are learning in class or to enrich a Unit of Inquiry we are working on
• inform families of what we are doing in class
• develop the regular habit of doing academic work at home.
St. Paul School's Homework Policy recommends 30 minutes of homework
every night for first grade. This time includes reading to and
with your child. Families can help by:
• supervising homework each day and assisting with directions
• providing a quiet place with supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue
A homework chart will be sent home in the blue Home-School Folder on
Monday with the homework activities for the week listed on it.
Additional directions and papers will be sent home as needed. A
family member (or a baby sitter, daycare provider or tutor) is to sign
the chart after each activity is completed. The homework and
homework chart should be returned to school in the Home-School Folder
on Thursday where they will be put in the homework basket.
Some of the homework activities may seem to easy for your child, others
too hard. It is important to work with your child at his or her
own level. For example, if the assignment is to practice counting
to 100 starting at any number and your child is having difficulty
counting the teen numbers, concentrate on this area when you are
practicing. If your child can count to 100, then practice
counting back from 100.
With the many activities, such as sports and dance, that families
participate in during the week, I know that it is not always easy or
convenient to do homework every night. It is hoped that this
system allows families some flexibility in completing homework.
