Kindergarten is Kids' Work
All About Me:
Hello and welcome to Highland Elementary; I have been teaching Kindergarten at Highland for 9 years. Previous to this, I taught 2nd grade, Reading Recovery (an early intervention program for 1st graders) and was a Teacher on Special Assignment, teaching literacy strategies to St. Paul teachers.
Educational background: Bachelor of Science University of MN Master of Arts in Education Hamline University
My husband John and I are life long residents of Highland Park. We have four grown children (two sons and two daughters) and four wonderful grandchildren; We spend our leisure time at our cabin in Old Frontenac MN and enjoy boating on Lake Pepin, golfing, walking, biking and going to garage sales.
My wish is for every child to be excited about learning, have a love of reading and writing and to use those tools as a means to discover and learn for the rest of their lives.
The Primary Years Program allows us to teach children through units of study that integrate the curriculum through a global theme.
Kindergarten Units of Inquiry Theme: Who We Are ( All about Me) September How the World Works Get in the Game October/November How We Express Ourselves (Illustrator Study) November/December Where We Are in Time and Place (Solar System) January/February How We Organize Ourselves Where did that come from? May/June How We Share the Planet Animals have class March/April
Daily Schedule: Calendar and Math Chinese/PE/Science Lunch Writer's Workshop Centers/choice time Reader's Workshop Snack and Sharing Skills and Music Recess dismissal ;
The daily schedule is integrated into the current Unit of Inquiry. Our daily activities, songs, literature and many math activities reflect our theme.
