HPE and Scripps National Spelling Bee Fall 2009
HPE has registered to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the 2009 - 2010 school year.  HPE will complete its portion of this competition by Winter Break to accommodate the national schedule of events.

As such, all students will be provided opportunity to compete in a classroom spelling contest.  The top three performers in each classroom will have the opportunity to compete to be top speller for that grade level.  The top three spellers from each grade level will then be provided opportunity to compete against the top three classroom spellers from each of the next highest grade level classrooms.  The competition will continue until all grade levels have competed and we have identified the one best speller for all of HPE.  That individual will be eligible to participate in the district level spelling bee.  The winner of the district level competition competes in the regional competition for the metro area.

It is important to note that although the competition will take place at school and during school hours, students will need to study and prepare for the spelling bee outside of normal school hours.  Classroom teachers may, or may not, assist in this preparation.

Proposed dates for this process:

October
November : Spelling word lists available to families at or before conferences.
Students begin independently studying their word lists.

Mid December : All grade levels will identify Classroom Spelling Champions
These contests will be followed by the grade level and cross grade                      level competitions to identify a school spelling champion.
That champion moves on to the district meet in January.
