I'm Mary Anderson, and am very pleased to be your district
Literacy Coach! I come to you as part of Highland's
continuing participation in the St. Paul Public Schools Project
for Academic Excellence. There are 13 elementary literacy
coaches, and we visit each of our four assigned schools once a week (on
average). Our charge is to support teachers
implementing Reading and Writing Workshop with their
students. Currently, fourteen Highland teachers have taken
one or more levels of district-sponsored trainings, and more will have
opportunities to do so this year.
There are a
variety of ways coaches may help support teachers: planning units
of study, teaching or co-teaching classroom demonstration lessons,
facilitating study groups, and offering information and resources. I am
very impressed with the program, staff, and students at Highland Park
Elementary, and look forward to a successful year in Reading and
Writing!
